For many Kuwait businesses, WhatsApp is where enquiries actually happen. Customers would rather send a message than fill in a form or wait on hold, and a website that makes that easy tends to receive more enquiries than one that only offers a contact page. But a WhatsApp button placed carelessly can leave you with messages you can't track, chats nobody answers, and no idea which pages bring the business in.

This guide is about connecting WhatsApp to a website well. If your question is whether to build a chatbot and what it would cost, that's covered in WhatsApp chatbot cost for a Kuwait business.

The simplest version: a click-to-chat link

WhatsApp supports click-to-chat links that open a conversation with a number when someone taps them, with no need for them to save your number first. The format is:

https://wa.me/965XXXXXXXX?text=Hello%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to%20ask%20about%20your%20service

The number is in international format with digits only: for Kuwait, 965 followed by the eight-digit number, with no plus sign, spaces, dashes or leading zeros. The optional text parameter fills in the first message, with spaces and punctuation encoded. Always click the finished link yourself on a phone and on a desktop browser before putting it live.

Where to put the button

  • In the header or a floating button on mobile, where a customer who has decided can find it without scrolling.
  • On every service or product page, with a prefilled message that mentions the page, so you know what they are asking about.
  • On the contact page, next to the phone number, email and form.
  • After a form is submitted, as an optional way to continue the conversation.

Make the button clearly labelled ("Chat on WhatsApp"), large enough to tap, and not so intrusive that it covers content or the page's main action.

Use a message that helps both sides

A blank chat makes customers think about what to write. A prefilled message gives them a start and gives you context. Make it specific to the page: a property listing could say "Hello, I'm interested in the apartment in Salmiya"; a product page could name the product. Keep it short and polite; the customer can edit it before sending.

The free app and the paid platform are different things

There are two products, and mixing them up causes confusion:

  • The WhatsApp Business app is a free app for small businesses, with a business profile, a catalogue, quick replies, away messages and labels for organising chats. It suits a business where one or a few people answer on a phone.
  • The WhatsApp Business Platform is the paid, API-based service used by larger businesses and by chatbot and CRM tools, with several agents, automation and templated notifications. It involves per-message charges and an approved provider.

Most small businesses should start with the free app and the click-to-chat link. Move to the platform only when volume, multiple agents or automation make it necessary; the costs and trade-offs are in the chatbot cost guide.

Don't make WhatsApp the only channel

Some visitors would rather call, email or fill in a form, especially for a formal request. A form also creates a record that your whole team can see, instead of leaving the enquiry on one person's phone. Offer WhatsApp alongside the others, and keep formal quotations and documents on email.

Track what the button is doing

WhatsApp conversations happen outside your website, so your analytics can't see them. What you can see is the click. Set up an event in Google Analytics (through Google Tag Manager or your site's code) that fires when someone clicks a WhatsApp link, ideally recording which page it was on. Compare those clicks with the messages you receive, and ask new customers how they found you. A website audit, as in Website Audit Kuwait, usually checks whether this tracking exists.

Answer quickly, and plan who answers

The button only produces business if someone responds. Decide who owns the number, what hours it is answered, and what the away message says outside them. A customer who messages at 11am and hears back at 9pm has usually gone elsewhere. If several people share the work, use the Business app's labels or move to a shared tool, so that conversations don't get missed or answered twice.

Where WhatsApp fits in an online store

For stores, WhatsApp is often used for questions before purchase and for order updates afterwards. If you currently take orders through chat, moving from Instagram orders to an online store explains how to bring those orders into a proper catalogue and checkout without losing customers who like to message first.

Privacy

Be open about what happens when someone messages you. Tell visitors that the conversation will happen on WhatsApp, avoid asking for sensitive details in chat, and don't add people to broadcast lists without their agreement. Customers who didn't expect marketing messages will notice.

Common mistakes

  • A link built with the wrong number format, so it doesn't open a chat
  • The same generic message on every page
  • A button that covers content on small phones
  • One person's personal number used for the business, with no one covering absences
  • No click tracking, so nobody knows whether the button works
  • Removing the phone, email and form entirely

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a chatbot to use WhatsApp on my website?

No. A click-to-chat link or button that opens a conversation with your business is free and takes minutes to add. A chatbot or the WhatsApp Business Platform is a separate decision, worth it only if the volume of messages justifies it; costs are covered in WhatsApp chatbot cost for a Kuwait business.

What phone number format does the link need?

The full number in international format, with digits only. For a Kuwait number that means 965 followed by the eight-digit number, with no plus sign, spaces, dashes or leading zeros, so the link looks like wa.me/965XXXXXXXX.

Can I fill in the first message automatically?

Yes, by adding a text parameter to the link. A prefilled message such as "Hello, I'd like to ask about this property" helps the customer start and tells you which page they came from. The visitor can still edit it before sending.

How do I know if the button is bringing me business?

A conversation in WhatsApp isn't visible to your website analytics, so track clicks on the button as an event in Google Analytics, then compare against the enquiries you actually receive. Asking new customers how they found you fills the gaps.

Should WhatsApp replace my contact form and phone number?

No. Some visitors prefer email or a call, and a form creates a record your whole team can see. Offer WhatsApp as one route among several, not the only one.
